Julia Hope Price Using Oils

Living in New Mexico the past few years, I’ve begun painting longhorns as well. I find that each one has such a distinct personality and coloring and an absolutely unique look. The shape of their horns is as individual as they are, and provide great opportunities to introduce a sense of drama and some interesting angles into the paintings.
I’m grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to study with some world class painters over the years. At the Academy of Fine Arts, I worked with acclaimed New Orleans landscape/figure painter Dell Weller. I have also studied with David Leffel, Kim English, and Richard Schmid.

I’ve exhibited in more than 200 group and solo shows since 1982. My paintings have been accepted for exhibition in several museum shows, and are well represented in significant private collections in the United States and abroad. I’ve been fortunate to receive several national and international awards, including the Eclipse Medallion Award at an international show in Vancouver, Canada, and Best of Show among Southern Representational Painters in Atlanta.

My Background

I am a lifelong painter, a transplanted New Orleanian who moved to the mountains of central New Mexico BK (Before Katrina).

I enjoy experimenting with color relationships and working with a variety of different sizes and surfaces for the subjects I paint, though my favorite medium has always been oil.

My earliest painting was a mural I painted on the bathroom wall when I was four. It was a tropical scene with birds and flowers—fortunately my parents liked it, and let it stay!

I received my professional training at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts in the 1980’s, but I’ve always tried to stay true to painting what I love. I want my paintings to reflect the joy that I feel about my subjects.

One of these subjects is horses. Growing up on a ranch, I started riding at the age of three. My first horse was a fat old mare named Daisy, who was to me the most beautiful horse in the world. When I began painting and drawing in earnest, I guess around the age of six, many of my first paintings were of horses. They are still a favorite subject of mine—I love the fine balance of beauty and intelligence combined with an enormous sense of power that horses have.
